Knowing Mathematics for Teaching Webinar

November 25, 2008

Deborah Ball photoNoted mathematics education researcher Deborah Loewenberg Ball, Dean of Education and Professor of Education at the University of Michigan, presented an NECC webinar on the kind of mathematics knowledge teachers need to know.

Based on a study of teacher practices and student outcomes she conducted with colleagues, Ball proposed that teaching is a form of mathematical knowledge that is not, however, synonymous with mathematics knowledge or competency. Distinguishing pedagogical content knowledge from subject matter knowledge, she explores the kinds of issues teachers face in analyzing mathematical problems from a perspective other than their own and designing effective mathematical learning tasks for students.
