Rhode Island

The Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE) continues to tap the Center for assistance in developing its comprehensive framework for educating English language learners (ELLs), with a focus on sustainability. That work includes revising the state's regulations (approved 2008), piloting an ELL District Monitoring System and tools such as a desk audit and interview protocols, and drafting an ELL guidance document. NECC is assisting RIDE in identifying research-based practices and programs for involving parents of English language learners and identifying pathways to guide ELLs to graduation, higher education, and careers. Rhode Island has also engaged NECC in building capacity for implementing its ELL framework through an educators' and stakeholders' professional learning community. In connection with this work, NECC is assisting RIDE in its Promising Practices Initiative (PPI) to identify and share successful strategies.
